Earlier, Saudi's de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed was sidelined during the official "family photo" of world leaders and other dignitaries at the Group of 20 summit, standing at the far edge of the group portrait and ignored.

His presence at the international summit has been contentious following the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at a Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October.

Russia's seizure of Ukrainian vessels and their crews on Sunday (November 25) near Crimea has raised fears in the West of a wider conflict between the two countries.

Russia said said the ships were illegally entering Russian waters, which Ukraine denies.

European Council President Donald Tusk told the summit the European Union would extend its economic sanctions on Moscow next month because of the incident.

U.S. President Donald Trump cancelled his planned meeting with Putin over the crisis, while British Prime Minister Theresa May called on Russia to release the boats and sailors that it captured.

Putin and the Saudi crown prince are due to hold a bilateral meeting on Saturday (December 1) afternoon, which oil markets will be watching closely for any sign of a breakthrough in a deal for Russia to participate in a production cut by the OPEC oil cartel next month.
