Mysuru: “Our government is seriously working on a project that aims to create jobs for 50,000 to one lakh youngsters in each of the 30 districts,” said chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Wednesday, highlighting the struggle among youngsters to find jobs.
He said that the government had already rolled out a scheme, ‘Compete With China’ to create job opportunities to generate employment for local youngsters in the near future. The CM, who inaugurated the silver jubilee celebrations of Vidya Vikas Educational Trust, said, “We have already identified nine districts for nurturing innovations, and product diversification. Work on these projects has started, and they will be implemented at the earliest.”

Recalling his interaction with students during his ‘Janata darshan’, Kumaraswamy said, “Many youngsters, particularly women, who have completed engineering, approach me seeking jobs. Many parents are left with huge debts to clear, unable to repay educational loans, which they might have taken expecting their wards to get high-profile jobs.”

The state government had sanctioned Rs 1,200 crore for development of infrastructure in schools and colleges across Karnataka to ensure quality and affordable education to all sections of society.

‘Nothing wrong if syllabus is changed every year’

Former chief minister and Union minister for law M Veerappa Moily, who also participated in the celebrations, recalled an advertisement taken out by the Maharashtra government decades ago, wherein it was proclaimed, ‘Bangalore University (BU) students need not apply’. “But now, after we have managed to set the whole system right, students from BU are famous not only across India, but also in many foreign countries,” said Moily.

The former CM said that he was distressed when he saw the advertisement, and was determined to find out what ailed the education system in Karnataka. “I was the education minister then, and decided to bring out a lot of changes in the varsity, including overhauling the syllabus, et al,” he said.

Stressing the need to keep the syllabus in line with the developments in all fields, Moily said, “Given the level of competition in the world, it is not a bad sign if the syllabus is changed every year. I request our higher education minister GT Devegowda to give importance to ensure quality education by reviewing the curriculum on a regular basis.”

Moily also inaugurated a newly-built auditorium on the VIdya Vikas Campus on the occasion. Vidya Vikas Educational Trust chairman and former MLA Vasu gave the audience a brief history of the institution. HD Choudaiah and KV Chidananda were felicitated on the occasion.
