Pirates thump Light Stars in Champions League opener

2018-11-29 08:07

Cape Town - Orlando Pirates cruised to a 5-1 CAF Champions League preliminary round victory over Light Stars FC at the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday.

Mario Ravo opened the scoring for the Seychelles side in the 17th minute before Thabo Qalinge levelled matters on the 25th minute.

Augustine Mulenga then gave the Buccaneers the lead while Mpho Makola provided a two-goal cushion five minutes before half-time.

Caio Marcelo was first with a chance in the second-half with a header that was kept out by goalkeeper Romeo Barra.

Qalinge was then denied by Barra before Ravo broke the deadlock as he smashed past Pirates goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane.

But Qalinge was unable to miss when the ball dropped to him on the rebound from Kudakwashe Mahachi’s initial strike.

Mulenga curled a shot onto the Stars crossbar before giving his side the lead with a superb finish.

Makola added a third with an excellent free-kick while Mahachi had a goal ruled out through offside, with Bucs dominating play.

Linda Mntambo was next to go close at the start of the second half before volleying over the crossbar from close range moments later.

Second-half substitute Justin Shonga added a fourth shortly after his introduction with an excellent curling effort while Mntambo finally got on target in the dying minutes of this one-sided tie.
