A man who fatally bashed a Melbourne mother with a brick and a golf club before dumping her body in bush 300km away has been jailed for 30 years.

Peter Brown, 57, pleaded guilty to murdering Simone Fraser at a Rockbank property in March over $3800 he had borrowed to send to a woman overseas and that he had failed to repay.

Supreme Court Justice John Champion ordered Brown to serve at least 24 years for the "grave and brutal" killing, in a sentencing hearing that was delayed after the wrong man was brought to court.
