NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Argentina's capital of Buenos Aires to attend the G20 summit, will discuss ways to meet the new and upcoming challenges of the coming decade with other world leaders, including US President Donald Trump.
"Looking forward to a wide range of interactions at the G20 Summit, aimed at furthering sustainable development," Prime Minister Modi tweeted soon after he landed here.

PM Modi said that through the 10 years of its existence, the G20 has tried to promote stable and sustainable global growth.

"This objective is of particular significance for developing countries and emerging economies such as India, which is today the fastest growing large economy in the world," he said.

PM Modi said India's contribution to global economic growth and prosperity underlined its commitment to 'Building Consensus for Fair and Sustainable Development', which is the theme of the summit.

"I look forward to meeting leaders from other G20 countries to review the work of G20 in the last 10 years of its existence and chart the ways and means to meet the new and upcoming challenges of the coming decade," he said.

"Thousands of kilometres apart, yet bound together by the spirit of oneness! Extremely grateful to the Indian community for the memorable welcome in Argentina," the PM said in another tweet as hundreds of Indians gathered to greet him.

Meeting with Saudi Crown Prince and UN Secretary General

On Day 1 of his trip, PM Modi will hold two important bilateral meetings - first with Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman and second with the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

According to official sources, PM Modi and Saudi Crown Prince will discuss all issues of bilateral and regional interest. In recent years, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been a valuable partner and India's relationship has expanded beyond the Indian community to issues related to the economy, energy and security.

PM Modi's meeting with the UN Secretary General is significant in the context of the importance that both the leaders attach to the issue of climate change. The UN Secretary General has reached out to PM Modi for the second time in two months, said official sources, adding, "The meeting reflects the respect in which PM and his initiatives are held globally to take the lead on issues of global importance."

The UN Secretary General's outreach comes just a week before COP24 in Katowice, Poland. It is a recognition of India assuming leadership role on global issues of people's concerns such as climate change and renewable energy.

Two important trilateral meetings on Friday

On Day 2 of his visit, PM Modi will hold two important trilaterals.

The Prime Minister will participate in the first-ever trilateral 'JAI' between Japan, America and India. He will also attend the 2nd Russia India China (RIC) trilateral, which is taking place after an interval of 12 years.

"The presence of India in these two key trilaterals is indicative of the country's growing diplomatic and economic profile in the world," official sources said adding, "it is the recognition of India as the global engine of economic growth and its emergence as an important factor of stability in the region."

"The scheduled meetings on the sidelines of the G20 summit are a reflection of India's willingness to contribute in a positive and a constructive way towards strengthening multilateral institutions like WTO and trying to build a consensus on new ideas like the Indo-Pacific," the sources said.

PM Modi will also meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the sidelines of the event, the ministry of external affairs had said on the eve of his departure.

He will also meet Argentinian President Mauricio Macri, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, along with the prime ministers of Spain, Jamaica, the Netherlands and the president of the European Union and the European Council.

The Prime Minister will also speak on his flagship programmes like the Jan Dhan Yojana, the Mudra scheme, Ayushman Bharat, and soil health card at the G-20 Summit. He will make a pitch to countries who are not within the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn to join the International Solar Alliance.

He will also highlight the risks posed by oil price volatility and raise the issue of combating terror financing and money laundering.
