Flights cancelled as wild weather hits Sydney Airport
Sydney Airport is experiencing significant delays and cancellations to flights as winds and rain take hold of the city.
Some passengers have been left stranded as about 100 flights have been cancelled or delayed.
Erin Kubian, 18, was visiting Australia from Canada with her family and was bound for Brisbane later on Wednesday.
Her flight has been cancelled until 6am on Thursday.
Looking for accommodation, Ms Kubain said, she was "not thrilled" by the inconvenience but at least she’d "get to see more of Sydney".
Sydney airport has three runways, shared by the Domestic and International terminals but only use two at a time, on a rotation basis.
An airport spokeswoman said just one was open at the moment and a second was opening and closing because of storm cells and lightning in the area and winds around the airport reaching 70km/h.
The operational changes caused massive delays and cancellations, but the spokeswoman said: "Safety comes first."
Airport staff were doing all they could to ensure passengers were inconvenienced as little as possible, she said.
She advised passengers to check in with their airlines for flight status updates.
C.J. Wang and his mother were planning a trip to Brisbane but, due to a cancelled flight, he said their "holiday is ruined".
The pair were trying to rebook a flight to the Gold Coast in the hope of still making it to Queensland on Wednesday.
