A new barrier installed to prevent Travellers from accessing a retail park could keep shoppers out too.

Andrew Dowsett said his Renault Traffic was damaged as he drove under the 1.9m metal frame, which has recently been erected near the Iceland store on the Clwyd Retail Park in Rhyl.

The courier, who was delivering documents to the store claims the barrier, which is 6ft 2" high, is the lowest barrier he's seen in Denbighshire, where most are 2.1m high.

When he drove under it, his aerial snapped off and there was yellow paint left on the roof of his vehicle.

He took a picture of the barrier and shared it on social media to warn shoppers with larger vehicles to be careful.

But managing agent for Clwyd Retail Park, Savills said a barrier of the same height has always been there but was temporarily removed during Iceland's construction.

It was recently reinstated to prevent "unauthorised access by larger vehicles."

Andrew, who lives in Holywell said: "Anyone with a family car such as a Volkswagen Transporter or 4x4 with a roof rack etc will have the same problem.

"I've never had any issues getting through a barrier in a Renault Traffic. This is the lowest barrier I know of in Denbighshire.

"The Marina Quay Retail Park and Rhyl Golf Club are both 2.1m.

"When I called to report what had happened, I was told the barrier was to stop Travellers accessing the site, but with a a height restriction of 1.9m, it will stop shoppers too.

"It's totally over the top and dangerous."

The move comes after Travellers in around 13 trailers and caravans set up camp on the privately-owned Iceland car park in August.

They left shortly after they were served with a court order by the land owner.

An Iceland spokesman said: "The car park and its barrier at this store are not Iceland’s property or responsibility. We have passed Mr Dowsett’s complaint on to our landlord."

Managing agent for Clwyd Retail Park, Savills said: “As the managing agent at Clwyd Retail Park in Rhyl, Savills can confirm that height restriction barriers have been in place at the small rear car park for a number of years to prevent unauthorised access by larger vehicles.

"These were temporarily removed during construction of the Iceland store and have since been reinstalled at the same height, with the restriction clearly sign posted.

"Shoppers with larger cars can use the main front car park where there are no height restrictions.”
