Anyone expecting the new 911 to be a radical departure was always going to be deluding themselves, and for two reasons.
One: when you’re tasked with replacing the most iconic and successful sports car in history, a conservative approach is preferable.
Two: although this is a new generation of 911, it follows the long-time 911 tradition where generations come in pairs. So just as the 993 generation was a heavily developed 964, and the 997 an optimised 996, so the 992 is derived from and informed by the 991.
So if you want a genuinely all-new 911 with zero design crossover, I’m afraid that you’re going to have to wait until around 2025, when the next 911 will be as revolutionary as was the 964 in 1989, the 996 in 1998 and the 991 in 2012.
Remember, too, that even generations have generations within them, and it looks likely that there will be as much to discuss when the ‘gen 2’ 992 breaks cover in around 2022 as now, because those are the cars that will bring hybridisation to the 911 for the first time.
For now, though, I think Porsche has done a fine job with the car. It looks smoother, sleeker and more modern, but no less characterful. Finding a way to improve upon what was one of the prettiest 911 shapes was never going to be easy but, on the outside, it looks just as good to me.

Looks great to me !
How do they keep doing it, brilliant detail engineering ? Think McLaren will be quite jealous of the panel gaps ? Seriously though other than the size increase, particularly width, which is never good for UK “B Road” drivers what is there not to like ? The 40 kg weight gain will keep the Lotus forums busy too ( what imbeciles those Porsche engineers are ) ! I’d love one but now even after three years of hard motoring the i8 still steals my heart !

Bit of a straw man argument
Bit of a straw man argument this. Who on Earth was expecting or asking for a wholesale redesign of the 911? It’s the most successful sports car bar none with many, many fans - by now, you either get it or you don’t.
Personally I am disappointed it is getting bigger and (presumably) no lighter. The new rear end is also a little tall and bluff for me, miles away from the pert elegance of the 993 (the high point in 911 design).

Indeed Scrap.
Most pointless article ever. It has only ever had 1 total total refresh and that was the 996 because of the need to save Porsche with water cooling and Boxster bit sharing.
The 991 was also a big change in that it got fat. The 992 has just got fatter again. By fat, I am referring to dimensions not weight, and it was handy dimensions that was always the 911's advantage.

I agree, almost everything is
I agree, almost everything is nice about the new 911 except for it growing in size. What else? Turbocharged engine instead of NA is a loss to some degree.
The best looking 911s are in the past now, but the modern ones are very nice daily drivers.
No manual - no fun

Fatter.....in weight & dimensions
Of course it's lovely....but the Carrera S is now a solid (or ought I say 'chunky' ?) 1.5 tonne car all day long. Porsche AG is quoting the above with PDK at 1515 kg DIN. True... it's not as much a lard-arse as the ludicorusly plump M2 Comp (1625 kg DIN) but AG must stop this continuing middle-age spread..... Is this a sports car or a GT ?
On the plus-side, this must be a boost for Geely-inspired Lotus who've got the chance to 'just add ligthness' in a future Esprit.....

Not quite.....
M2comp isn’t in the same league, for a Start, look at the difference in price, one is a Supercar the other a sports car, yes there’s a weight difference, no two will be the same one or two up, it’s the old adage, you buy what you want, what you can afford, your choice nobody else’s, and don’t let anyone tell you different.

Conflation and non sequiturs....
The M2 is not in the same league ? Yes, if you're looking at price and other metrics. But the reference is there as illustration of how weights and measures are on a continuous upward march - against a backdrop of global warming and (excessive ?) consumption.
You pays your money & makes your choice etc...? Mmm: that is rather stating the blindingly obvious and doesn't address the clear fact that the 911's relentess accretion of avoirdupois is a major concern. Though perhaps not to you.

They need to reduce the
They need to reduce the dimensions and stop the turbo engines.

The lights going right across
Digital instrument infestation is fundamentally a poor idea and history will not be kind to then when they look old, crap and break.
But none of that matters because it is ruined by turbos.
Sadly, it all ended with the 997.
