KOLKATA: A 47-year-old teacher of a prominent south Kolkata school was allegedly pushed, molested and threatened by a driver whose photograph she tried to click after he slammed his car against her vehicle near Sapuipara crossing on Garfa Main Road around 3.30pm on Monday. The woman lodged a police complaint late on Monday night and the accused was picked up within hours.
The teacher claimed that all her efforts to seek help from locals proved futile as the accused managed to gather a crowd that kept insisting that she let the matter end right there. Worse, when she finally set out yet again to rush to a service station, the accused chased her down and blocked her way, this time to insist that he be pardoned and that the police should not be involved.
“I had reached Sapuipara crossing on my way home when a white Innova rammed my car from the right. The driver then reversed instantly and tried to drive away. I instructed my driver to block his path and got out to know why he drove so recklessly,” recalled the complainant.
“He looked clearly drunk. When he refused to seek an apology, I told him I would involve police. He shot back: ‘Ja hoyeche charun. Ebar jan (Forget whatever has happened. Now go)’. I realized that I needed to teach him a lesson and took out my phone to click his photograph. This infuriated him and he charged at me. Even when my driver intervened, he pushed me down. My driver was also attacked,” she told TOI. The next moment, the attacker abandoned his vehicle and left the spot only to be back with a friend.
“The second person seemed drunk as well. He insisted that I drop the case but I resisted. This time, his friend started threatening me. A few men who had gathered there said cops could be of no help. I realized there was no point arguing and left, but decided to stay firm on my decision. When the accused yet again stopped me on the Jadavpur connector — blocking my way — insisting his apology was enough, I told him my decision will not change,” she said.
The teacher first reached Kasba police station. An officer from there accompanied the woman to the spot. Realizing the area fell under Garfa police, Kasba police immediately took her to the Garfa police station where a case was registered. “I stayed at the police station till 10pm to ensure that the case gets reported,” she said.
Garfa police has arrested the accused — Ramkrishna Chandra (47) — who runs a small travel agency along with her son. The cops said the arrested was tested for alcohol content but it turned out to be negative.
