Chief Minister to inaugurate the block on Thursday

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate a multi-specialty block (MSB) at Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) here on Thursday.

The block will house the sophisticated intensive care units of various medical specialities and it will have 102 ICU beds with ventilator facilities and 44 high-care beds. The building has two levels below the ground, where one floor has been devoted to parking facilities, electrical station, pumping room, oxygen plant, maintenance room and a dining room for visitors to the hospital.

A most-modern mortuary has been built one level below ground, with freezer facilities to keep 48 bodies and three tables for performing postmortem.

The Regional Geriatrics Centre functions on the ground floor and this is the first government medical college in the State which will have a comprehensive geriatric care facility with 16 high-care beds and special geriatric OP clinics.

The poly-trauma facility on first floor will care for patients of the Surgery and Neuro Surgery departments. Each department has 18-bed ICUs.

The multi-disciplinary 24-bed ICU run by the Anaesthesiology department occupies the second floor and it is intended for the care of patients with various illnesses that require critical care.

The third floor houses the Cardiology department and its modern Cath lab, Echo lab and 18-bed ICU, while the fourth floor houses the two modern operation theatres and the 18-bed ICU of the Cardiothoracic surgery department.

This facility will help the MCH deliver high quality care and bring down the disparity in care between private sector and public sector hospitals, Health Minister K.K. Shylaja says.
