A seven-member team deputed by the Centre to assess the damages caused by Cyclone Gaja inspected the affected areas in Karaikal region on Monday.
The team, led by Daniel E. Richard, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, held a review meeting with District Collector Kesavan and senior officials in the presence of Agriculture Minister R. Kamalakannan. The meeting lasted an hour.
After holding meeting with officials, the team visited places affected in the cyclone. The team interacted with the affected people in Pattinacherry, T.R. Pattinam, Neravy and Tirunallar and and got first-hand account of the damage.
The team collected particulars on the extent of compensation needed to take up repair works.
Sources said fishermen in several coastal hamlets complained that they had not received any relief or rehabilitation so far.
The team will meet Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy and hold discussions with officials in Puducherry on Tuesday. The Puducherry Government has sought an assistance of ₹187 crore from the Centre towards Cyclone relief for Karaikal region.
