Rajan Ghate breaks fast, rushed to Goa Medical College

Rajan Ghate was on a hunger strike since November 16, demanding that Goa CM Manohar Parrikar step down.PANAJI: After RTI activist Rajan Ghate’s health deteriorated, he was rushed to Goa Medical College and Hospital on Monday evening by his supporters where he was admitted for medical treatment. Ghate was on a hunger strike since November 16 as part of a demand that CM Manohar Parrikar should step down or hand over his responsibilities to a deputy CM.
Congress workers and other social activists, who were present, said that Ghate was unable to continue and had decided to break his fast-unto-death. Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress, activist Kenneth Silveira, Goa Congress president Girish Chodankar and others aided Ghate as he was taken to the hospital.
On November 24, Ghate had ignored calls to give up his fast and had instead urged Goan youth to join in his protest effort.
Speaking earlier in the day, Chodankar had pleaded with Ghate to give up his hunger strike and had also requested Parrikar to stop being adamant.
Chodankar also announced that he would hold a one-day token hunger strike on Tuesday as part of a struggle to restore Parliamentary democracy and governance in Goa.
“Things in Goa are going from bad to worse. Ghate has been on a fast-untodeath for the last 11 days, and the state government is not moving an inch. It shows its arrogance, inhuman, carelessness and selfish behavior,” said Chodankar, who will sit on a day-long fast at Azad Maidan in the capital.
