Truck crashes into Commonwealth Avenue Bridge on Parkes Way
Engineers are inspecting the damage to the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge after a truck carrying an excavator failed to pass under it on Parkes Way on Tuesday morning.
No one was reported injured in the incident, which happened about 10am. The National Capital Authority, which oversees the land the bridge is on, said engineers had reported no structural damage to the bridge.
The one westbound lane on Parkes Way was still closed as of 2pm as engineers worked to ensure the bridge was safe to pass under due to the risk of loose rubble falling onto cars below.
Emergency services advised Canberrans to avoid going westbound on Parkes Way with traffic congested back to the Corranderk Street roundabout.
The authority was not able to determine whether the lane would be reopened in time for peak hour on Tuesday evening.
Police and emergency services suggested Canberrans use an alternative route.
