The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday refused to entertain a mercy petition filed by an engineering student who could not earn a degree in the past nine years, India Today reported.

The student from National Institute of Technology in Kurukshetra took admission at NIT in 2009 was awarded 17 compartment during his four years at college.

He had requested the court another attempt to clear the exam, but the court refused saying that it had no sympathy for people like him who 'waste the nation's resources'.

The court said the expenses incurred by the government during this period were manifold compared to the fees that he paid.

"When you could not pass an engineering degree in nine years how can you clear 17 compartments in one attempt. It is better to choose some other career, but not engineering," the court observed.
