A pothole-ridden street in VOC Nagar
Chennai:
Streets in VOC Nagar was severely battered and turned unmotorable after the rain. The busy stretch connects Hanumar Koil Street in Radha Nagar and PTC Depot Road. Several motorists use the roads to reach the neighbouring areas, including Purushothaman Nagar and Hasthinapuram. In addition, scores of women, school children and senior citizens use it regularly. It is punctuated with potholes and tarmac has given away at various places of the stretch.
“This stretch has been badly damaged and not re-done for the past six months. Authorities never attempted to repair the stretch. As the rain started lashing, the Municipality workers dumped construction debris in the potholes. But the debris mixed with stagnant water has left a slush behind. This has rendered the road unusable for the motorists,” a resident said.
Residents said that the civic works should have been completed during summer. “Various stretches in this locality requires the immediate attention of the local body. The civic works in this area came to a halt following the delay of local body elections,” another resident said.
An official from Pallavaram Municipality said, “We have identified badly damaged roads in the locality. Soon we will start laying roads.”
The recent spells of rain have badly damaged the roads in the suburban areas of the city. Many roads, including vital stretches, under Pallavaram Municipality cry for attention due to the inferior quality of work. Residents say these roads have not been tarred for the past couple of years.
