Sajan Shankar Sanap was attached to Mumbai's Amboli police station

A police sub-inspector (PSI), attached to Mumbai's Amboli police station, was run over by a train in Pune's Shivajinagar area on Tuesday morning, said the Government Railway Police.

The deceased, identified as Sajan Shankar Sanap, was in his mid-thirties and was survived by his wife and two children, said railway police sources.

While it is being speculated that PSI Sanap may have taken his own life, the cause of his death remains unclear, senior GRP officer, Manoj Khandale told The Hindu.

He further said that Mr. Sanap's death was being treated as a case of 'accidental death' until further evidence emerged to the contrary during investigations.

Sources said that the incident occurred sometime between 9:30 and 10 a.m. on Tuesday. It is believed that Mr. Sanap was run over by a train near the Sangam Bridge area.

"Sanap was visiting his residence in Nashik since the past few days. It appears he was reported in some misdemeanor there, which resulted in a case under section 376 [rape] being lodged against him by a lady who accused the PSI of harassing her," said Inspector Khandale.

"Only after we examine witnesses will it emerge whether there is a suicide angle to this case or not," Inspector Khandale said.
