The second edition of the city Corporation’s green congress will be held on December 1 and 2 at SMV Higher Secondary School. ‘Rebuilding Kerala - environmental possibilities and challenges’ is the focus of the congress.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Mayor V.K. Prashant said the local body’s Green Army initiative, aimed at raising awareness of sanitation and environmental protection among the young generation, is now active in 30 schools in the city. “Through the initiative, we have developed an active volunteer force in the city. We saw how these volunteers worked tirelessly for days to collect and send relief materials from here to various districts affected in the recent floods,” he said.
With the recent floods being the centre of discussion at the second congress, 20 students from the flood-affected districts of Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur and Ernakulam will share their experiences at the meet. They will hold interactions with Green Army volunteers in the city. Suggestions on rebuilding and disaster preparedness put forward by the participants will be collated and presented to the State government.
Cultural programmes
Cultural programmes will be held as part of the congress, with competitions in painting, photography, documentary film-making, quiz and other items. The competitions will be under the broad themes of health, sanitation, waste management, basic infrastructure, disaster management, water-energy conservation and agriculture. Competitions at the lower primary and upper primary levels have already been completed.
As part of promotion of the event among the public, a performance by the ‘Chumaduthangi’ band was held at a city mall on Sunday. A treasure hunt in which participants were given clues to locate seven material recovery facilities of the Corporation was held recently.
