MCG to empanel abattoirs in Gurugram instead of setting up one

GURUGRAM: After having planned a modern slaughterhouse for the past eight years, MCG has now canned the project due to non-availability of land. The corporation has instead floated request for proposals (RFPs) for the empanelment of private slaughterhouses, which will not only provide meat but also facilities for slaughtering.
According to MCG commissioner Yashpal Yadav, though the corporation was in talks with the Haryana State Industry and Infrastructure Corporation (HSIIDC) for land for the slaughterhouse, the discussions never succeeded. MCG then looked for private land, but no one was ready to provide land due to social and religious concerns.
“Meanwhile, we found out that there are a few private slaughterhouses running in Tauru, Mewat. We had discussions with them. They are ready to provide meat as well as a facility for slaughtering,” said Yadav.
He added that the RFPs were floated last week and once the proposals come in, they will start the process for empanelment.
As of now, MCC is considering proposals by four private players — three based in Mewat and one in Sonepat. “We want as many players as possible so that the rates are competitive. But the slaughterhouses have to meet the required hygiene standards too,” said Yadav.
Asked about the prices for the meat being supplied by these slaughterhouses, Yadav said the prices for both meat and slaughtering will be determined by MCG.
The main aim, officials said, is to ensure that there is no slaughtering within the city limits. The new proposal will save the government around Rs 100 crore, as per MCG.
Sources, however, said the project seems unviable as most meat shop owners are small-scale businessmen who would not want to pay additional transportation costs. Given that meat is a perishable item, there is also the risk of it being damaged in transit, they said.
