Closure date revealed for Roger David's 57 stores

The collapsed menswear chain Roger David will shut the doors on its nationwide chain of stores for the last time on Sunday, marking the end of 76 years of retail history.

Administrators KordaMentha, who were called in October, said December 2 would be the last day of trading at the 57 stores after it was unable to find new owners for the company.

Roger David employs 500 full-time and part-time workers, who had shown "tremendous loyalty" by working hard to sell stock during a closing down fire sale, according to KordaMentha's Craig Shepard.

The retailer was founded in 1942, and at one point grew to more than 100 stores nationwide. In 1942 it was responsible for dressing the Australian cricket team, which included Don Bradman.

But Roger David had been closing stores in recent years as it was hit by rising costs, and competition for international fashion giants and online players.

"The forces working against it were too strong", Mr Shepard said.

All remaining new season stock has been marked down by 70 per cent in a final push to clear merchandise.

“It can be a triple-win in the next six days – people can get a great bargain, a Christmas gift and help provide the cash to pay employees their entitlements,” Mr Shepard said.

Roger David is the latest in a string of retailers to go under amid low consumer spending and structural upheaval in the sector.
