Man charged over alleged rape of girl, 7, in Kogarah

A man will face court after being charged over the alleged sexual assault of a seven-year-old girl in Sydney's south earlier this month.

Anthony Sampieri, 54, was charged with 11 offences following his arrest on Sunday afternoon.

His arrest follows an investigation by Strike Force Berliet, launched by detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad.

On November 15, emergency services were called to a dance studio in Kogarah just before 8pm to reports of concerns for the welfare of a child and the stabbing of a man who tried to help her.

Police will allege in court Mr Sampieri physically and sexually assaulted the seven-year-old girl in a toilet in the building.

Two men attempted to detain the 54-year-old, and in the ensuing struggle one of the men was stabbed several times.

He was taken to St George Hospital for treatment but later released.

Paramedics took Mr Sampieri to the same hospital, and he remained in corrective services custody while being treated.

After being deemed fit by doctors, Mr Sampieri was taken to Maroubra Police Station about 4pm on Sunday where he was arrested.

Later on Sunday evening Mr Sampieri was charged with sexual intercourse with a child under 10, choking a person with intent to commit an indictable offence, aggravated kidnapping, using a child under 14 to make child abuse material, aggravated indecent assault, attempting or assaulting with intent to have sexual intercourse with a child under 10, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and two counts each of wounding with intent and filming an aggravated act of indecency.

Refused bail, Mr Sampieri will appear at Waverly Local Court via audiovisual link on Monday.

Strike Force Berliert investigations into the incident are ongoing.
