LUCKNOW: If you want to get a fitness certificate for your vehicle but don't have time to stand in queues at the Regional Transport Office (RTO), there's some good news for you.
RTO is planning to allot date and time slots online for people wanting to get fitness certificates for their vehicles.
A fitness certificate is must for commercial vehicles and those private vehicles which have eight seats and more to ply on roads.
As per the Motor Vehicle Act rules, a vehicle is considered to be unregistered if does not have a fitness certificate or if it has expired. Without a valid fitness certificate, vehicle owners would be not be able to claim even insurance money.
Currently, RTO sets the date of inspection seven days after the day the certificate expires, right when it issues it. "We always get complaints that RTO sets the next inspection date almost a year in advance. Vehicle owners are often unavailable on the particular date," said a source.
Under the new arrangement, one would be able to book an online appointment as per convenience and take the vehicle for an inspection to the RTO.
The online appointment could be made at least 45 days before the certificate's expiration.
The new rule has been implemented in Barabanki as a pilot project and will be extended to Lucknow in December.
