The government has sanctioned ₹10 crore from the State Disaster Management Fund to provide interim relief to the people affected by cyclone Gaja in Karaikal, Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy has said.
Addressing a press conference at his residence on Sunday, the Chief Minister said the government had set aside ₹25 crore as corpus fund for disaster relief. Out of it, ₹10 crore had been sanctioned for the cyclone relief.
A few days after the cyclone hit Karaikal on November 15, the Chief Minister had announced a compensation of ₹2,000 each to around 9,500 thatched huts in Karaikal.
The government had also decided to provide a compensation of ₹4,100 to around 1,100 houses that were damaged completely.
The Puducherry government had announced ₹5,000 relief to those fishermen whose livelihood was badly affected. The government has also announced ₹64 lakh as interim relief to provide assistance to fishermen whose fishing boats were damaged in cyclone Gaja.
The interim relief announced by the government would be disbursed to the beneficiaries through their bank accounts from Monday, the Chief Minister said.
Jaitley’s assurance
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had assured to provide adequate compensation to the UT after the Central team submitted its report.
After winding up the visit to the affected areas in Karaikal on Monday, the Central team would hold deliberations with the Cabinet members and higher officials on Tuesday, he said.
Bandh ‘unwarranted’
The Chief Minister also warned cadre of Bharatiya Janata Party of serious consequences if they created any law and order issue during the bandh on Monday.
He said the bandh called by the BJP against Kerala government’s stand on Sabarimala issue was not necessary in the UT.
