Farmer rescued from kidnappers

COIMBATORE: The Erode police rescued a farmer from a six-member gang after a hot chase and open firing near Namakkal on Saturday night.
The gang demanded 10 lakh as ransom to release R Sathivel, 45, of Keelvani near Anthiyur in Erode district. Sakthivel owns acres of land.
S Kavivarman, 35, of Appakudal Four Road in Bhavani taluk, received a phone call from an unidentified person on Saturday informing that his uncle Sakthivel has been kidnapped and the caller demanded s 50,000 to release him.
Kavivarman, also a farmer and AIADMK town secretary of Bhavani town, arranged 50,000 and handed over the money to the kidnappers through his farm workers Murugan, 25, and Gokul, 23 at Lakshmi Nagar. After receiving 50,000, the gang refused to release Sakthivel and demanded 10 lakh more.
Kavivarman held talks with them and agreed to provide 5 lakh. Later, he approached the Erode police who traced the mobile numbers of the kidnappers and fixed the location of the kidnappers.
Two police teams led by Bhavani inspector MN Elango and Anthiyur inspector Ravi went to Salem to rescue Sakthivel.
The two police team also sought help from Annathanapatti police inspector Kumar and his team for assistance.
On Saturday night, Kavivarman and Gokul went to Salem in a car with 5 lakh cash to pay the kidnappers and get Sakthivel released. Policemen in plainclothes followed them.
At around 7.30pm, the kidnappers came near a college in Salem district and collected the amount. Meanwhile, the police team rounded up the kidnappers. Two kidnappers got down from the car and threatened the police with sickle and managed to escape. Four kidnappers who were inside the car drove away on Attayampatti–Venandhur Road.
The police team gave a chase. The kidnappers’ car lost control and came to a halt at a roadside pit at Alavaipatti.
Two kidnappers came out of the car and hurled stones at the police team and attempted to assault the policemen using sickles. Meanwhile, sub-inspector Senthil and Salem city police inspector Kumar opened fire five rounds in the sky and arrested the kidnappers. However, two more kidnappers managed to escape in the car after dropping Sakthivel near Namakkal town police station.
“We have detained two kidnappers, who are being interrogated. We will nab the entire gang within two days,” said a senior police officer.
The Erode police have registered a case against the kidnappers under section 364 (A) of the Indian Penal Code and further investigation is on.
