According to The Hollywood Reporter, the passed away on Monday morning (local time).

His films include 'Last Tango in Paris' and 'The Last Emperor', for which he won for best and best adapted screenplay.

He directed his first feature film, 'La commare secca', at the age of 22. It was a murder mystery about a prostitute's homicide that used flashbacks to analyse the crime.

'The Last Emperor' was the first Western made in and won all nine for which it was nominated- best picture, director, writing, adapted screenplay, cinematography, editing, costume design, art direction-set decoration, music, original score and sound.
