Crisis in JD(S) over new chief

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With K Krishnankutty of Janata Dal (S) replacing Mathew T Thomas in the Pinarayi Vijayan government, the party have to find a new chief to lead its state unit.

Selecting the new state president of the party will not be a smooth affair. Party veteran C K Nanoo will claim the post and Krishnankutty will have to support him in a quid pro quo act. However, his candidature is facing opposition from within the party due to his age.

However, the national leadership of the party is of the view that Thomas should be made the state unit president as he is stepping down as minister. But there is stiff opposition in the party against Thomas becoming the president.

If the stalemate over the selection of the new president continues, then the national leadership will be forced to step in to find a candidate acceptable to all. Neelalohithadasan Nadar is likely to emerge as the consensual candidate as he is acceptable to both groups in the party.

The state party meeting will be convened to take a call on this soon after the swearing in of Krishnankutty. Considering the infighting, the state leaders are likely to leave the decision to the national leadership.

Thomas will tender his resignation to the chief minister on Monday.
