RPF has received complaints that they trouble commuters

After receiving numerous complaints, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has formed a special team to curb transgenders from troubling passengers in the suburban trains in the city.

The special team would conduct drives in various suburban sections to prevent harassment being meted out to commuters by transgenders seeking money, a senior RPF official said.

The special drive, to be jointly conducted with the Government Railway Police (GRP), will have policemen inspecting the suburban trains on the four sections daily.

Warning to transgenders

The RPF official said that complaints were being received from commuters about the abusive behaviour of transgenders when passengers do not give them money, especially on the mass rapid transit system (MRTS) and Chennai Beach-Tambaram section. The special team will initially issue warnings and advice the transgenders not to harass the commuters.

R. Ajith, a resident of Mylapore, said the transgenders operate on the MRTS section round-the-clock. “Some of them do not mind if the commuters do not give them money, but at times they are abusive with the youth who look submissive,” he said.

A few commuters have also filed complaints about the abusive behaviour in the complaint board of the National Consumer Complaint Forum seeking action from the railway authorities.
