Drunken biker on rampage: Folk singer Harshad Mistry’s road mishap proves fatal

Mumbai: Harshad Mistry (55), a Gujarati folk singer, died of brain haemorrhage on Sunday morning. He was knocked down by a biker on November 4 on the Western Express Highway at Dahisar. The accused biker was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. According to police, the accident took place at 4.15 pm on November 4 near a bus stop at Dahisar. Harshad was looking for an auto since his wife had left from her residence.

They were supposed to go for a religious function together. When Urvashi reached the bus stop she was shocked to see passers-by craning their necks to catch a glimpse of her husband who was lying in pool of blood. The accused, Shabbir Ramzan Sheikh (25), was arrested after the accident and later released on bail. He was re-arrested on Sunday by the police. Sheikh, a resident of Jogeshwari, worked at a private firm.

Earlier, Sheikh was booked for rash driving or riding on a public way (Section 279) and causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others (Section 338) and produced before the court and later released on bail. After Harshad’s death, he was booked for causing death by negligence (Section 304 (A)) of the Indian Penal Code.Vasant Pingle, senior police inspector, Dahisar police said, “Sheikh has been arrested again on Sunday. The case has been transferred to Jogeshwari police station.” Urvashi is a home-maker.
