The Mumbai Congress on Saturday alleged that electricity bills of three million consumers have jumped by 50% since the sale of the city’s power system between the “friends” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, industrialists Anil Ambani and Gautam Adani.

The party has put up over 100 hoardings with a photograph of Mr. Modi talking to Mr. Adani and Mr. Ambani, with the banner reading: “Friends who are together trying to loot Mumbai and Mumbaikars.”

The party said even the energy, wheeling and fixed asset charges have jumped manifold since Adani Transmission took over Mumbai’s power supply system from the Ambani-led Reliance Energy Ltd. “Adani Transmission was already in debt and we had flagged the possibility of a massive hike in tariff once the deal went through,” Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam said.

The hoardings have been put up at prime locations such as Andheri railway station, Kalina campus of the Mumbai University, Charkop, Four Bungalows in Andheri, Juhu Circle, DN Nagar and the airport, party members said.

Adani Transmission had earlier said it would seek approval to implement of ‘time of day’ pricing after taking over from Reliance.
