Sofia’s father had demanded action against her

The Thoothukudi District Court dismissed a plea by the father of Lois Sofia, A.A. Samy, seeking action on his complaint against BJP State president Tamilisai Soundararajan and BJP members, after the police submitted that there was no prima facie case against them on Friday.

The Pudukottai police, who were to submit the report by November 20, made the submission before judicial magistrate-III S. Tamilselvi.

The police reportedly conducted an inquiry with members of the BJP, and looked at other material evidence, including CCTV footage, of the incident. However, the complainant and family members of Ms. Sofia were not part of the inquiry, said advocate E. Athisaya Kumar. He said a copy application had been filed to receive the submission and added that they would approach the High Court.

Ms. Sofia, a Canadian research scholar, had allegedly dubbed the BJP-led NDA government “fascist” at the Thoothukudi airport on September 3, following which a heated exchange broke out between her and Ms. Soundararajan and BJP members.

Dr. Samy, a resident of Kanthan Colony here, filed a complaint saying death threats were issued by the members of the BJP.

The court earlier ordered the Pudukottai station inspector to register a case if there was evidence against them, and submit an inquiry report before the court.
