MUMBAI: A 22-year-old MBBS student from BYL Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central was rushed to JJ Hospital in Byculla with grievous injuries to the head on Sunday evening. JJ doctors said the woman was critical and is likely to need ventilatory support.
The police are probing whether Ila Rahilkar jumped off or fell from the second floor of New Amin Mansion at Nagpada junction in Madanpura.
New Amin Mansion is a two-storied residential-cum-commercial building which houses an Urdu newspaper's office on the first floor. Aslam Usmani, who runs a mobile shop on the ground floor of the building, said: "I heard a loud thud and saw people rushing towards my shop. I stepped out and saw a woman lying between two parked bikes. She was bleeding. No one knew her." Her purse was lying next to her, said the police.
Usmani said a few people called up the women and children's helpline '109', and within minutes, the police reached the spot. They took her to the hospital. A source said that some people even checked her cellphone to call her family numbers, but there was no SIM in the phone. No one saw the woman entering the building.
The police contacted Rahilkar's parents, who live in Vile Parle, about the incident, and they rushed to the police station.
JJ Hospital medical superintendent Dr Sanjay Surase said the woman was brought to the emergency department in an unconscious condition at 8.40pm. "She has a serious head injury. We are carrying out investigations," he said, adding that she is either a second- or third-year MBBS student.
Nair hospital dean Dr Ramesh Bharmal said Rahilkar is an 'exceptionally bright student' and the incident has taken the college by surprise. "We were told about the incident by JJ doctors and the police," he said. "We will wait for the police to investigate and find out what led to the incident." tnn
