With a burning passion for his ancestral home, Adam Liaw explains the history behind the culture behind the food at every stop along the way of his Chinese odyssey. Beginning in his mother's hometown of Beijing, where he later cooks for her, Liaw learns about the banquets of the last Chinese dynasty from a descendent chef. Comparing such feasts to those of the Romans and Anglo Saxons, he makes salient points about food as medicine.

BLIND DATE
★★
8.30pm, Ten

Catering to a wider age range than its naughty little sister show on Seven, Take Me Out, this snazzy Julia Morris vehicle strikes a harmonious chord between risque and romantic. The revival of the Perfect Match formula is an amusing reminder that blind dating is not something invented by Tinder. And Morris is made for the role of campy den mama. Tonight, she plays wing woman for an Irish dancing champion from NSW.

ON THE ROPES
Miniseries premiere ★★★★½
8.35pm, SBS

The family dynamics within this complex local drama about a young woman's discouraged desire to become a pro boxing trainer are not what might be expected of a conservative immigrant storyline. As the heroine's father, Israeli actor, Igal Naor is a beautiful contradiction of devoted parent and proud community figure. A sophisticated script carries an interesting version of the David and Goliath plot. A seriously kick-arse feminine energy sets the whole production on fire.
