Sonia Chahal’s bull run at the World Championships ended with a split 1-4 decision against Ornella Gabrielle Wahner of Germany in the 57kg featherweight final here on Saturday.
The 21-year-old settled for a silver medal after losing to the 2011 junior world champion in a bout largely dominated by her opponent.
The Bhiwani-based pugilist looked to be under pressure as Wahner went on the offensive from the word go. However, the 2016 national champion displayed her never-say-die attitude and kept coming back on counter attacks in the first round.
But the opening round was the only saving grace for the Indian as the German bossed the next two. The 25-year-old Wahner worked mostly on a single gameplan: she kept pushing Sonia to the corners, and then punished her with quick jabs and straight punches.
“I am happy to have won a silver in my first World Championships. I will analyse my weaknesses and work hard for the 2020 Olympics,” Sonia said.
