Leopard kills 8-year-old student
TNN | Nov 26, 2018, 04:48 ISTChandrapur: An eight-year-old girl was killed in leopard attack near Awalgaon village under South Brahmapuri range on Sunday morning. Victim Khushi Thakre, a Std II student of local ZP school, was preparing for upcoming sports tournament in the school when the incident took place.
While Khushi and fellow students were participating in a run, a leopard lurking inside the shrubs caught her by the jaw and dragged her 100 meters away into a thicket in a nearby farm. Fellow children started screaming for help. By the time villagers reached the spot, Khushi had succumbed to the injuries.
Sunday’s is the 21st human kill in predator attack in the district this year. Tigers have claimed 13 lives so far, whereas leopards have killed six. Apart from this, sloth bear and wild boar have killed a person each.
Forest officials have given ex gratia aid of Rs25,000 to the kin of the deceased.
A woman was injured in leopard attack in Pawanpar in the same area on November 18. Earlier, an eight-year-old boy was killed in predator attack in Murpar and a girl in Chichgao was critically injured near her home. Rising tiger and leopard attacks in the area have scared the people. Villagers have submitted a memorandum to forest department demanding immediate measures to trap the problem leopard.
