A Cuban communist revolutionary leader who served as the Prime Minister of Republic of Cuba from 1959 to 1976 and as President from 1976 to 2008. During his tenure, Castro was successful in reducing illiteracy, helped to put an end to racism, and improving health care. He adopted the Marxist-Leninist model of development - the first in the Western Hemisphere. He converted Cuba into a one-party socialist state under Communist Party rule. Fidel Castro was the longest-serving head of state in the 20th and 21st centuries - he polarised world opinion. According to his supporters, he was an advocate of socialism and anti-imperialism whereas the critics viewed him as a dictator.
