Over 900 penalised for wrong parking in last five days in city

CHANDIGARH: The drive of the UT traffic police against wrongly parked vehicles continued on Saturday and the cops issued more than 900 challans for wrong parking in the city since November 20. After the directions of Punjab and Haryana high court, the UT police have constituted sector wise anti-wrong parking squad under six subinspectors and started a special drive against the wrongly parked vehicles in the city.

As per the data, the cops challaned 104 motorists for wrong parking on the first day of its drive. On November 21, the squad issued 63 challans, 314 vehicle owners were fined on a single day on the third day of the drive and 239 persons were challaned on Friday.


Till the filling of the report, the squad has issued more than 200 challans and the final data is yet to compiled. However, some residents complained that there is no parking space in their sectors and cops are issuing challans without providing any space for parking in residential areas.


Traffic police have deployed six sub inspectors in six zones to check the parking of vehicles on footpaths and cycle tracks in the city. Police told that their main emphasis is on V-4 and V-5 roads to curb the menace of wrong parking of vehicles.


All six squads have been provided four zebra motor cycles with challan officer, recovery van with one officer for making public announcements and issuing challans on the spot for wrong parking of vehicles, eight pairs of wheel clamps to each incharge to affix wheel clamps on the wrongly parked vehicles, wrong parking stickers and one operator with camera for taking still pictures before and after enforcement to each anti-wrong parking squad.


The Punjab and Haryana high court had observed that why an FIR should not be registered against the violators. The high court also said that if the conditions do not improve, the SSP will face action. The high court has also summoned deputy commissioner and municipal commissioner, chief architect and SSP in the next date of hearing.
