Thiruvananthapuram: After a stray dog attacked two people on the campus of College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET), demand is rising to find a solution to the menace.
On Friday afternoon an assistant professor and a technical staff of the campus were attacked and injured by a stray dog.
Ajitha, an assistant professor at the civil engineering department, had just stepped out of the geotechnical lab when she was attacked by a dog. Hearing her screams, Christopher, a technical staff of the CET campus, came to her rescue, but the dog attacked him also.
The students and faculty members came running and saved Ajitha and Christopher from the dog. Later, they were taken to the General Hospital, where the wounds were treated.
CET principal Jiji C V said there were around 20-25 stray dogs wandering around the campus.
“Residents in the area dump garbage and food waste including meat near the compound wall of the campus, which attracts stray dogs,” said the principal.
Praveen a fourth-year electrical engineering student said there are many dogs wandering near the men’s hostel.
“Out of fear we do not step out of the hostel in the evening. A few months ago, a stray dog entered a classroom. Luckily it did not attack anyone,” said Praveen.
Meanwhile, the civic body officials said there was nothing much to do apart from subjecting animals to animal birth control (ABC) procedure.
“What the city corporation could do is to catch all the dogs from the campus. After ABC procedure the animals will be released,” said K Sreekumar, health standing committee chairman of Thiruvananthapuram corporation.
