Though the two-day State School Science Fair (Sasthrolsavam) that began here on Saturday is low-key in its organisation as part of the government’s post-flood austerity measures, the enthusiasm of student participants in displaying their innovative science projects and models is by no means subdued.
The Sasthrolsavam, in which over 5,000 students are participating in various segments, is being held at various schools .
Many attractions
While the science fair is being held at St. Teresa’s HSS here, the works experience fair is under way at the neighbouring St. Michael’s HSS. Social science fair, mathematics fair, IT fair, and the fair for the special schools are being held at different schools in and around the town.
A major attraction at the science fair is a vehicle balancer attached to a designed vehicle that helps the vehicle from tilting and overturning in case of an accident.
Gokul P. Nair and Chandana D.S., Plus Two students of GVHSS, Payyoli, who developed the system, said its applications suited off-road driving, easy ride in disaster-hit areas, transportation of goods by army personnel, among others.
A mobile barricade that can be used by the police or military is another attraction. It can be remote-controlled using mobile phone or laptop. It has water cannon and camera facilities and sensors for detecting arms and bombs. Shyam Salash and Tins Paul of GVHSS, Kamballur, in Kasaragod said they got an invite from the local police station for its demonstration after the display of the barricade at the district-level fair.
Adithya Chandra Prashanth of Government Model Boys HSS, Haripad, named his device as Intelli Baobab, Baobab being the name of a genus of deciduous trees that can store water in the truck. He said that intelligent Baobab was a technological adaptation that converted atmospheric moisture to water.
Manas Manohar and Sanrag K. of Rajiv Gandhi Memorial HSS at Mokeri called the G-file App they developed ‘next generation e-governance’. It not only track files but also ensures that all files will have a digital copy.
