‘Police fired in retaliation after accused opened fire on them’

Five foreign nationals were arrested after a brief exchange of fire in south-east Delhi’s Taimoor Nagar in the early hours of Saturday, the police said. Two accused sustained injures in the encounter, they also said.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajiv Ranjan said that the accused have been identified as Kabir, Farooq, Zakir Indadul, and Aslam, all from Bangladesh.

The police said that Farooq is the leader of the gang, which is involved in crimes committed in several parts of India.

The accused were also involved in firing at a police officer in Preet Vihar in July this year.

Mr. Ranjan said that the team working on Bangladeshi criminals committing crime in Delhi-NCR received an information on Friday that Farooq and his gang members are in Taimoor Nagar.

“The team reached the spot and laid a trap. The informer identified the accused, who were asked to surrender. However, but they opened fire on the police instead. Head constable Vijay was shot at but he was saved by the bullet-proof jacket he was wearing,” Mr. Ranjan said.

The police claimed to have fired three rounds at the alleged criminals “in retaliation”, during which two of them got injured. The five accused were ultimately overpowered and arrested.

Mr. Ranjan said that with their arrest, four cases of robbery, burglary and firing on police officer have been solved.

“Three countrymade pistols, five live cartridges and three used cartridges were seized from them,” he further said.
