With more monsoon showers expected, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Friday instructed officials to distribute tarpaulin sheets to people in cyclone-affected districts, where roofs of several thousand homes have been damaged.
The tarpaulin sheets were to be sourced by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation with funds from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund and distributed to the affected people through the respective District Collectors, the Chief Minister said in a statement.
“The roofs of most houses have been damaged due to the cyclone. There have been representations for the distribution of tarpaulin sheets to prepare for the Northeast monsoon,” Mr. Palaniswami said.
As of Thursday, a total of 3,41,820 housing units, including 2,78,824 huts and 62,996 tiled houses, had been affected due to the cyclone.
The CM had already announced compensation of ₹10,000 each to housing units that were completely damaged, and ₹4,100 each to those that were partially damaged.
In a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the State government had sought funds to the tune of ₹100 crore for temporary restoration and ₹6,000 crore for permanent restoration.
Rains have already resumed in some of the cyclone-affected areas.
