Win for Wynne
Our election expert Tim Colebatch says Labor's Planning Minister Richard Wynne has retained the seat of Richmond after fighting off a challenge from the Greens.
Every vote counts
By Aisha Dow
In Victoria’s most marginal electorate of Prahran, not only does every vote count, but also every second preference.
As Liberal candidate Dr Katie Allen canvassed votes on Saturday, she also had a more unusual request for those who had already committed to another party – to put her second.
It was testament to the expected closeness of the three-horse race, also featuring sitting Greens MP Sam Hibbins and returning Labor hopeful Neil Pharaoh. The seat is held by a margin of 0.4 per cent and was decided off the back of preferences in 2014.
Early results on Saturday were indicating a significant swing away from the Liberals, but as was the case four years ago it appeared preferences will again be crucial in deciding the eventual victor.
Under pressure
By Michael Fowler
Labor candidate John Kennedy is enjoying a 9.8 per cent swing in Hawthorn.
The Liberal Party has remarkably held the former seat of Ted Baillieu since 1955, but incumbent John Pesutto is under serious pressure from John Kennedy in Hawthorn.
“Once upon a time we were regarded as a bunch of ratbags in these parts,” Kennedy told The Age.
“Then I stood against Josh Frydenberg in the 2013 federal election and got 39.8 per cent in two-party preferred…and now Labor is becoming more and more acceptable in the eastern suburbs.”
Greens also in trouble
Our election expert Tim Colebatch says that while the Greens appear to have picked up more votes, they are struggling to win any seats.
With a third of the vote counted they are trailing in Northcote, the seat they won at last year's byelection, Prahran is impossible to call, and Labor has clearly retained Richmond and probably Brunswick.
Melbourne is the only seat where the Greens are leading.
Cheers and jeers

It’s been a roller coaster past hour in Clunes. At 7pm Labor volunteers shouted “boo!” at the TV as incumbent Liberal MP Louise Staley led by 0.5 per cent.
Just now, they cheer loudly in celebration as Sarah De Santis takes the lead with 50.9 per cent of the vote. They don’t call it state’s most marginal seat for nothing.
