618 motorists penalised for wrong parking this month

CHANDIGARH: According to the data given by the Chandigarh traffic police, as many as 618 challans have been issued to the UT residents in November for parking wrongly in different parts of the city.
On Thursday, 314 vehicles owners were fined for parking on footpaths and cycle tracks - as many as 481 motorists have been slapped with penalties in the last three days.
A total of 176 challans were issued this month in the east zone by the team of sub-inspector Balram Rana. Around 112 motorists were challaned in the UT's south-west zone. South-east zone registered 100 challans for wrong parking. While central zone team has issued 85 challans so far, south-central zone and east-central zone teams penalised 79 and 66 people, respectively.
In his orders, SSP (traffic) directed DSP (traffic) to provide four zebra motorcycles with challan officers; a recovery van with one challaning officer for making public announcements and issuing on-the-spot challans for wrong parkings; eight pairs of wheel clamps to each official to attach wheel clamps on defaulting vehicles; wrong parking stickers and one operator with camera for taking pictures.
The move is being followed on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana high court. Following the orders, the UT traffic police have constituted sector-wise anti-wrong parking squads under six sub-inspectors. The cops have been directed to check the parking of vehicles on footpaths and cycle tracks in the city. Police officials said that their main focus would remain on V-4 and V-5 roads to curb the menace of wrong parking of vehicles.
The high court also said that it the conditions do not improve in one week, the SSP will face action. The high court has also summoned deputy commissioner and municipal commissioner, chief architect and SSP in the next date of hearing.
An HC judge stated that these violations were found in front of the park of his house. "If there are so many violating in front of my house, I can only imagine the traffic condition of the city," the judge said.
