Bus driver detained for rash driving

Three people were injured after a train hit a NMMT bus near Juinagar at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The bus (route No. 18) was heading from Vashi depot to Bamandongri in Ulwe, while the train from Sanpada carshed was on the way to Nerul.

An officer from Nerul police station said, “The bus driver thought he could safely cross the tracks as the train was approaching it at a very slow pace. He made a misjudgement and the train collided with the bus, damaging its rear side.”

The Nerul police detained the bus driver, Rahul Gaikar, and towed the bus away from the tracks. Akshay Patil, an eyewitness, said, “The train sounded its horn as it approached the crossing. Though the other vehicles waited for the train to pass, the bus continued to move ahead.”

Two women and a boy were injured in the accident and they were admitted to DY Patil Hospital. The injured have been identified as Neelam Tyagi (42), a resident of Sector 4 in Nerul; Bratati Biswas (32), a resident of Juinagar; and Sarvesh Thanekar (12), a resident of Sector 21 in Ulwe.

Sudhakar Pathare, deputy commissioner of police (Zone I), said, “All three sustained minor injuries. A case will be registered against the bus driver for rash driving.” Ramchandra Dalvi, NMMT chairman, said, “The driver joined two months ago and is working on a contract basis. We will take action against him.”
