PUNE: Friday’s accident, in which two persons died and three others were injured, occurred just 500 metres from the Chatushrungi police station on Ganeshkhind Road. The car had jumped the median near Kendriya Vidyalaya.
Assistant police inspector Sandesh Kenjale, who was on the night shift at the Chatushrungi police station, rushed to the spot and called the ambulance service on the way to the spot.
A crowd had gathered by the time the police reached the spot. “Residents and passersby joined us in helping the victims, who were unconscious. We first sent those with lesser injuries to the hospital in private vehicles,” he said.
Ramshettiwar and Nair were taken to the hospital in an ambulance, where they were pronounced dead by the doctors.
Darade said the car belonged to Nair. “We will ascertain who was behind the wheel only after Barman and Negi regain consciousness. For now, we have booked the car driver under section 304 (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicle Act,” Darade said.
The initial probe has revealed that the four colleagues were returning from a party. “They had attended an office party at a restaurant in Vimannagar on Thursday night,” Darade said.
It is unclear whether they were going toward Shivajinagar to drop someone or if they were going somewhere else. “We are looking into it,” Darade said.
Nair’s brother came to Pune from Chennai to collect his body. He told TOI that Nair a Master of Business Administration graduate from an institute in Pune and had worked for the company for four years. He was not married. “We will take his body to our native place in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala for the last rites,” Nair’s brother said.
A colleague, who was at the police station, said Ramshettiwar too was an MBA graduate.
“He hailed from Chandrapur district and had joined the company about eight months ago. He was to get married next month and was very excited about it. Preparations for the Wedding were in full swing,” he said.
The colleague added that Ramshettiwar was active on social media till late on Thursday night. “Everyone from our office is in a state of shock,” he added.
Jagdale, meanwhile, works for a travel agency — Chintamani Travels. “On Thursday, Jagdale was getting the minibus repaired at a garage till late at night. He was driving home to Sangvi after the repairs were completed when the accident occurred,” his employer — the owner of Chintamani Travels -- said.
Jagdale’s leg was broken after he got stuck between the engine and his seat. “The engine of the minibus was completely damaged,” he said.
