ROHTAK: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday announced the name of Jagmati Sangwan, a prominent social activist, as its candidate for the forthcoming election for the post of mayor of Rohtak municipal corporation on December 16.
The party district secretary, Vinod Deswal told media persons here that CPI(M) will appeal to all Left, democratic and progressive forces to support their nominee so that a pro-people alternative could be projected in the elections. He said the party was hopeful that people will rebuff the communal and casteist forces.
Sangwan has been a relentless fighter for the basic rights of ordinary people, especially women. Born in a family of small farmer, she represented the country as a member of the volleyball team and was conferred with Bhim Award by the Haryana government. She said her party was in favour of decentralization and accountability of the corporation so that the interests of common people, who remain deprived of minimum basic amenities, are served better.
