PANAJI: Less than a week after a group of citizens marched towards chief minister Manohar Parrikar’s Dona Paula residence demanding his resignation, citizens, activists and political parties will come together on Saturday to organise a public meeting to exert further pressure on the Parrikar-led coalition government.
While the objective of the gathering is to demand for a full-time chief minister, the activists also plan to train their guns on governor Mridula Sinha who, they feel, has been a “mute spectator”.
Social activist Aires Rodrigues declared the public gathering, and further said that famed cardiologist Dr Francisco Colaco would preside over the gathering at Azad Maidan, Panaji. “Goa desperately needs a full-time chief minister. Parrikar adamantly continues to cling to the chair. It’s time for citizens to hit the streets demanding the restoration of good governance,” Rodrigues said. RTI activist Rajan Ghate, former Goa Forward Party spokesperson Trajano D’Mello, Congress party members and other social and environmental activists will also be part of the meeting.
Rodrigues said that though a concrete action plan would be announced only on Saturday evening, he said taluka-level protests will be organised. “This agitation, to restore governance in the state, will be spread over all 12 talukas,” he said, acknowledging that it was Parrikar who taught him how to organize agitations against the government.
The NCP claimed to be in the dark about the meeting, but said that it was open to supporting the cause.
