Four foreign nationals, including two women, were rescued after they were attacked by a mob in Dwarka followings rumours of cannibalism, the police said on Friday.
The incident happened at Hari Vihar in Kakrola under Dwarka North police station on Thursday evening. The victims, who belong to Tanzania and Nigeria, have been living in a rented house in the area for the last two months.
A rumour was circulating in the area that a foreign national had kidnapped a teenager.
The 16-year-old “kidnap victim” was later found in the area itself, the officer added.
Soon, locals gathered outside the house rented by the foreign nationals.
A local called the police control room at 6.30 p.m. and a team rushed to the spot. The situation was brought under control and the foreign nationals, after being evacuated safely, were taken to the police station.
“None of them have sustained any injury. The crowd was dispersed after they were assured that no kidnapping had taken place and that there was no cannibalism in the house. We are trying to identify the rumour-mongers,” said a senior police officer.
