Delhi: 5 Bangladeshi men held after gunfight

NEW DELHI: Five members of a gang of robbers of Bangladeshi origin were arrested after a shootout with the police in south Delhi’s Taimoor Nagar on Saturday. The gang members were found to be involved in a case of robbery in Bengaluru, where they had raped the victim’s daughter before fleeing with cash and gold.

Additional CP (Crime), Rajiv Ranjan, said the gang members had come to Taimoor Nagar to recce a house they intended to break into. “When the cops challenged them, the men opened fire. In retaliation, our team fired back and two robbers suffered bullet injuries on their legs. It was later found that the men were involved in several robbery cases across the country,” said Ranjan.


Police have seized three pistols with some live cartridges and house-breaking instruments from the accused. The robbers were identified as Kabir, Farooq, Zakir, Imdadul and Aslam. Most of them were found to be residents of districts in Bangladesh, which border India.


During interrogation, the accused told the the police that they would escape to Bangladesh after committing a series of crimes in India. They were also found to be involved in the shooting of a policeman in Preet Vihar some months ago.


Cops suspect the gang to be involved in a robbery at a businessman’s house in east Delhi.
