MUMBAI: Maharashtra government on Saturday informed the Bombay high court that it would take about four more weeks to issue a final notification to reserve nearly 50 acres of private land in Goregaon (West) for Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU) campus.
Government lawyer, Jyoti Chavan said while a draft notification had been issued, the process was on to issue a final notification and sought time for it. Once the land is secured, MNLU will be all set to take shape in Mumbai. The land identified is at Pahadi, Goregaon (West).
In April, a bench of Justices S C Dharmadhikari and PD Naik, while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by a city lawyer Pradeep Havnur to ensure better infrastructure including land for MNLU, had pointed to the Goregaon land.
If that land is acquired, the government has stated that it is ready to reserve that as well for this university but it is for the university to indicate its choice.
Earlier, a piece of land at Gorai was chosen, but local fisherfolk had objected to it, said Chavan.
A bench of Chief Justice Naresh Patil and Justice PD Naik recorded the state’s submission and posted the matter for further hearing after four weeks.
