Rebels attack Chinese consulate in Pakistan

A Chinese consulate came under attack in Pakistan on Friday (November 23), when three suicide bombers targeted the compound.

At least two police officers have died.

Images from the scene showed bags filled with explosives.

But the insurgents were reportedly killed before they could enter the unit.

The attack has been claimed by the Balochistan Liberation Army, an ethnic insurgent group, that says it opposes what it calls Chinese exploitation of the country's resources.

Neighboring China is Pakistan's closest ally and its main benefactor.

Beijing ploughs billions of dollars into infrastructure projects there, including a deep-water port in the province of Balochistan - a home base for the insurgents.

They say China is encroaching on land belonging to the indigenous people there.

Pakistan Prime Minister called the attack a - quote - conspiracy - against the two countries' strategic cooperation.

It's the most prominent attack against China, in Pakistan's history.
