Five arrested for kidnapping cab driver

Five men have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a taxi driver and extorting ₹50,000 from him. The accused — Krishnanaik, 24, Yashwanth Kumar, 23, Ramesh, 20, Shashikumar, 22, and Arun Kumar, 20 — hail from Denkannikote in Tamil Nadu.

Bommanahalli police said the gang is named in eight cases of theft and robbery in Hulimavi, Begur, Konankunte and MICO Layout, among other places.

Around midnight on October 16, Haribabu, who works as a driver for a private firm, was returning home after the last drop when the gang stopped him and forced their way into the car. Later, they called his brother, Ashok, demanding transfer of ₹50,000 to their account. After withdrawing the money in Anekal and Kollegal, they demanded more.

In the meantime, Ashok had filed a complaint with the Bommanahalli police who formed a special team to nab the culprits. The gang panicked and dropped off Haribabu in Kollegal.

Police eventually tracked down the gang and recovered multiple vehicles from them.
